Announcing our next Zine:
TEN YEARS

Our founder, Rowan, held the first meeting of the Calgary Asexuals and Aromantics in 2014. Since then, we've hosted countless events, expanded across the province, changed our name, became the first registered society for a-specs in Canada, and advocated for awareness & understanding among doctors, educators, religious leaders, and all levels of government. We’ve seen the growth of a vibrant community of asexuals, aromantics, a-specs, and allies. We take pride in where we’ve come over the last ten years, while looking towards an even brighter and more inclusive future together.

To acknowledge this history, we’re planning a new Zine with an open-ended theme: TEN YEARS.
We invite you to celebrate, reminisce, and dream with us! Maybe you want to reflect on the past decade: how has your identity evolved, where has your a-spec journey taken you, what have you come to learn about yourself? Or maybe you want to look ahead: how are your life goals shaped by your identity, where do you see yourself going, what's your vision for the world around you?

Deadline to submit your work to the Zine: January 25, 2025

FAQ

If you have questions not answered here, please contact Sasha at ABAcesandAros@gmail.com

Who can contribute towards the Zine?

Anyone in or from Alberta who identifies as asexual, aromantic, a-spec, or questioning/unlabelled.

What format is accepted for submissions?

Any original work, such as writing, art, photos, etc. The TEN YEARS theme is open to interpretation, so the content can be anything you want!

We recommend keeping submissions to max 1 letter-sized paper (8.5” x 11”). You can view a template here (optional) – we welcome creativity and will work with you to make sure your submission fits in the Zine.

How do I submit?

Email your submission to Sasha at ABAcesandAros@gmail.com. Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or an image file is preferred, if possible.

Please also tell us how you want to be credited! We hope to use name & location but can be as vague or specific as you want, e.g. “Alex (he/they), Lethbridge” or “Anonymous, northern Alberta”. We can also include your social media handle if you want.

How will the Zine be published/shared?

It will be published online, the same as last year’s Community Zine, and advertised on our social media accounts. There will be a limited print run, and every Zine contributor will receive a free print copy of the Zine.

Note: as a non-profit education-focused society, the Zine is sold by donation and offered freely online for accessibility. We unfortunately do not have the funds to pay Zine contributors, and hope this will not discourage you from sharing your story for the Zine.
